One of the biggest concerns that most dog owners have when setting out to buy a new dog kennel is the size. Will it be big enough? Or too big? Dog owners don’t want their dog to be cramped but, as you may know, too much room in a kennel can be a bad thing too.
The first thing that must be decided upon when determining the proper size dog kennel is what the kennel will be used for. Will it be stationary in the backyard? Or will this kennel be used mainly for travelling. If it is for travel, it must be made sure there is enough room inside for the dog to stand up, spin around, and lay back down. This will ensure your dog will be happy whilst inside the kennel.
Before more on kennel size is discussed, the distinction between dog kennels, dog crates, and dog houses must be made. Dog kennels are usually referred to as a larger area, approximately 1.5 meters x 3.5meters, that is fenced off to contain the dog. These kennels are also known as dog runs, although in some people’s eyes a dog run is a larger area than a dog kennel. Smaller kennels can also be portable and used for transportation of a dog and are best explained as a small box that contains the dog. A dog crate is usually the same thing as a portable dog kennel and the two can be used interchangeably. The term dog house refers to a dog crate that has been personalised to look more like a dog home than a dog kennel. Some examples are dog igloos or dog cabins.
Some other things to consider when selecting a dog kennel are the size of the dog, the level of activity of the dog, and the dogs waste habits. Larger more active dogs will require larger kennels than smaller dogs i.e. 2m x 3m or 3m x 3m. This of course depends on how much space the owner has available. Consideration of the dog’s waste habits is a very important factor. A dog will usually use the outside area of the kennel to do business so the owner must ensure the kennel is large enough so the dog will not sleep, eat and play in its own waste. This also helps to improve the health and well being of the dog. If all these factors are taken into account your dog kennel and run should be well suited to your loved one.
